Silba is calling you

Small in size, the island of Silba hides some of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, and is surrounded by the cleanest and bluest sea. Beautiful nature, rich history and tranquillity are reason enough to return to it year after year…

A little bit of history

The island of Silba (lat. Silva = forest) is one of the northernmost islands on this side of the Adriatic. It belongs to the Zadar archipelago and is surrounded by the islands of Olib, Ist, Škarda and Premuda. The island’s area is only 15 square kilometres, and on its narrowest part is the only village of the same name, whose history dates back to the 9th century. It is located on the old waterway that leads from Zadar towards Istria and further to the Bay of Trieste and Venice and has two anchorages for ships - west and east.

The settlement grew up within dry-stone walls. In addition to small family houses, there are a number of well-preserved captains’ houses surrounded by gardens. The captains’ houses bear witness to the rich history of maritime tradition of Silba, which dates back to the second half of the 16th century. Of the historical monuments on the island, there are several sacred buildings. The medieval church of St. Mark and part of the defensive structure built during the 16th century. The centre of the town is dominated by the four-story bell tower, which was relocated from the parish church. The impressive belfry and the Toreta, i.e. lookout tower, date from the 19th century, and over time have become iconic points of this island.

Silba - the island of pedestrians

An island of pedestrians, as the locals call it, is an island that lives its own life. Pedestrians rule here and Silba is an ideal place for all those looking for a peaceful vacation, far from the noise, hustle and bustle of everyday life. The only means of transportation for guests and locals are hand-pulled trailers, or “karići”, which can be seen on the island in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours.

In such an environment, it is a pleasure to have a good pizza or a morning coffee. There are several restaurants and cafes and three well-equipped shops in the village. If you are an early bird, you can also catch some fish offered by local fishermen.

Beautiful beaches and clear sea

The coast of the island is rich in pebble and sandy coves with some of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, which you can usually access via well-maintained paths or land paths.

The largest and most famous Šotorišće beach is located on the eastern side of the village with a view of the island of Pag and the Velebit mountains. Due to its position on the island as well as its configuration, this beach is extremely popular among adults as well as children. The shallows and the sandy bottom give it a beautiful turquoise colour that will enchant you. On the southern side of the island, there is Nozdre cove with two sandy beaches and several pebble beaches. The coast is rocky in that part with access to the sea.

On the western part of the settlement, which looks towards the island of Premuda, and to the north of the boat dock, there are pebble beaches Žalić, Tratica and Carpusina. To the south of the pier is the large Pocukmarak cove. This cove consists of a series of small beaches with a rocky and pebble coast. The cove is popular because of the combination of pebble and sandy bottom.

However, apart from the ones mentioned, Silba hides many more wonderful coves and beaches, such as Pernastica surrounded by pine trees in the north or Dobra Voda and Vele stene in the south, which you can discover and enjoy every day.

Silba shines with gold, on it heavenly enjoyment

Silba is decorated with forests, beautiful beaches and clear blue sea. With over 2,570 hours of sunshine per year, a wonderful climate and an indescribably turquoise sea, Silba is a pearl in the sea that will delight you with its uniqueness and hospitality.
